Andrew Cawley is 46 years old. He is a kind, caring, sensitive, slightly over weight and rapidly ageing family man. He also suffers from a rare and very serious condition.
Struggling to cope with a narcissistic personality disorder, his self-perceived fantastic grandiosity is coupled with hypomanic mood swings that leave him excessively preoccupied with issues of personal adequacy, power, prestige and vanity.
For the last 10 years he has spent much of his time in therapy with us at the Bluestorm Trust. Here, he refers to himself as ‘the director’, issues often incomprehensible ‘instructions’ and endlessly talks and sings about himself.
The songs, which typically include: ‘I love me because I understand me’ and ‘There’s no business like Andy’s business’, provide the self affirmation he craves, whilst the inevitable and almost incessant teasing, mocking and humiliation that he endures as a consequence is passed off as ‘banter’ or ‘humour’.
We have tried everything to help him deal with this unique condition but, as yet, all our efforts have failed.
